I have made art journals since 2018 to document and understand my experiences. The structure of a house has been a recurring imagery in my art over the years and the concept of home occupies a large part of my mind.

The Home In Heart & The Home In Hand.

A home is supposed to be a place of safety and reassurance, a sanctuary of comfort against the world outside. My experience differs. My house has a history of being loud and angry, it is a place I approach with caution. If home is supposed to be shelter, where do you go when it is home you need sheltering from?

This experience has been difficult to endure, and I have coped by choosing to be an artist instead of a victim. Over the years, I have made art revolving around this topic to represent situations in my life that were otherwise unexplainable. I believe the need to feel at home is indispensable for the survival of most living beings and if you are not given this by circumstance, you will attempt to create the illusion of it, as I have tried to do time and again by exploring different mediums.

This project communicates the contrast between home as I have experienced it and the ideal home I envision for my future. While works such as I Started Drawing When I Was 6 and HomeLites express the emotional turmoil of not belonging, Family Secrets exposes the privacy of abuse. Others such as The Apartment and Hom/pe aim to manifest a safer space. My motivation for selecting such a confronting subject has been to comfort anyone who connects with my experience as this is a topic not generally acknowledged in our society.
